Not All Diamonds Are Forever

Her head spun in disbelief as she gazed at the brilliant rock being placed on her left ring finger. She was engaged! It wasn’t the rock alone that impressed her, it was the thought put into the ring itself. A gorgeous solitaire diamond set on a white gold pave diamond band. She took mental note of her outfit in comparison to the exquisite ring on her finger. How could anything match its beauty? Not even a little black evening dress was on level with something so gorgeous. But even more beautiful was the man in front of her, and her growing love for him every day. He wasn’t looking at the diamond, he was looking at her. She knew that to him no diamond would ever compare to her. No diamond would ever be more beautiful than the way her saw her.  She found herself lost in the ring, taken in by its alluring shine that she forgot everything around her. The man became a blur as she focused more on the piece that adorned her hand. For months she ignored the relationship that was failing, and told herself that such a ring could only mean she was his diamond forever. But when she finally broke free of the charms of the shimmering rock, she was alone. She was left with a fading diamond as she herself faded away. The ring no longer had the sparkle that it once had, as the relationship between herself and the man turned to nothing. The once beautiful diamond had no sparkle anymore. She was not his diamond, not his forever. The diamond ring was put away in a box, never to shine again, just like the relationship. Not only did she lose two of the most beautiful things she had ever had in her life, the man lost his diamond as well, the most beautiful thing he never wanted to lose. Even if she gave him the ring back, he lost his diamond, because it was her. It was never about the ring. Not all diamonds are forever, but she held onto hope that one day she’d find one that would be.
