The Darkness Did Not Comprehend It

"The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it."

Some say the darkness in John 1:5 refers to evil in the world unable to experience the light because it is solely evil. Perhaps, but let's think about this a moment. If God is the light of the world, and we are made

in the image of God, would we not also be bearers of light? Even though we are made in the image and likeness of God, we can choose not to resemble him or acknowledge him. Now this quote says that light does shine in the darkness, not that darkness extinguishes the light. So where darkness is, light also is too, but the darkness is dark only because it cannot comprehend the light.

Now think about humanity. There are pure souls of goodness, and then there are souls who do horrible things. These dark souls are only dark because they have buried their light, a light that can only hidden, not gone. Only when God passes judgment may that light potentially be taken away, and the souls cast into eternal darkness. This sounds scary, but it is a choice. To choose not to comprehend something is a choice. As human beings one of our greatest strengths is our knowledge, and this is gained through learning. Learning gives us comprehension that was not present before.

God, in giving us free will, gave us the choice to learn about Him. Not a requirement, not a demand. A choice. So at the end of our days, we have decided what we are. Light, or darkness.
